 Let's Sketch the Cleveland Arcade

401 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44115 March 24, 2024 1:30pm til 4pm.

The Grand Dame of Cleveland, the Arcade was built in 1890. Contrary to popular legend, it wasn't the first indoor shopping mall in the US, but it's still a great place to draw. We haven't sketched in here since 2018, so it's time to revisit this gem.

2999 Payne Ave, Cleveland OH February 25th, 1:30pm till 4pm
An indoor shopping mall in Asiatown. I have not been here in person but hope to check it out beforehand to see if there are any special needs to address for our sketchers. I would think if you have a sketching stool it would be a good idea to bring it. Hope to keep up the momentum from our interesting Brownhoist Bldg event!

Let's Sketch the Brownhoist Building

4403 St Clair Ave, Cleveland, OH 44103 1:30pm - 4pm.
An interesting place to be sure, built in 1880, the central portion of this building was moved on rollers to its present location and the wings added afterward. It’s now an inclusive creative/maker space and hosts and has hosted numerous creative events. A flute recital will be going on while we’re there, which we may or may not be allowed to sketch. Lots of other stuff going on in the building. The oldest operating elevators in Ohio, a hard cider maker in the basement, seven vaults used to handle the company's payroll, and all sorts of stuff. The building served as offices for the Brownhoist company’s manufacturing plant across the street north on Hamilton, which is a giant enclosed space that used to assemble cranes.

An informative article about the building is also here https://neo-trans.blog/.../25/brownhoist-lifts-a-new-future/

77th Annual One World Day in Cleveland Cultural Gardens

Cleveland, OH – Since 1945 the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) has celebrated One World Day which exemplifies the theme of the Gardens: “Peace through Mutual Understanding.”  Plans are in the works for the 77th annual One World Day which will be held on Sunday August 27, 2023 from 11 AM – 6PM throughout the Gardens on both East and MLK Boulevards.

Tens of thousands of people attend One World Day to experience diversity in people, heritages, gardens, entertainment and food.  With the streets closed to traffic, visitors can stroll, bike, scoot or ride the free shuttles throughout the 250 acre footprint and visit many of the 35 or so Gardens.

Special attractions include a moving Naturalization Ceremony where people from a dozen or so countries become US citizens.  A highlight is the Parade of Flags where hundreds of marchers from dozens of cultures march with flags and traditional clothing of their heritage.  The Parade of Flags has grown into a large and colorful display of the numerous heritages represented in the Gardens and the broader Cleveland community.

Throughout the day there will be ethnic and cultural performances on the main stage at the Centennial Peace Plaza but also in most of the Gardens.  When people visit a Garden they will experience the culture of that community. Kids of all ages will enjoy the interactive Children’s Village and adults can relax in one of the Beer Gardens in the German and Irish Gardens.

As always there will be special guests, performances and attractions which will be announced as we get closer to the big day.

One World Day Producer Johnny Wu says, “One World Day has become a “must-do” event in Cleveland on the last Sunday of August each year.  Free admission, free parking, free entertainment and more make it a family-friendly event to bring summer to a close.”

Parking can be found at the Cleveland Metroparks (based on availability) lot to the north, or the VA Hospital’s employee parking lot at 1606 E. 105th Street, Cleveland, OH 44106. A shuttle will be available to bring patrons to and from the VA employee parking lot to the south entrance of One World Day.
